If you are struggling and thinking you need help and are wondering what to expect from your therapy process, considering these points will be helpful. Various factors can influence the length, pace of progress and overall effectiveness of your therapy. Here, we’ll explore these facets in detail, and shed light on how each contributes to the therapeutic process.

How long can I expect to be in therapy?

Therapy duration is not a one-size-fits-all concept; it’s a nuanced aspect that varies greatly depending on individual needs and circumstances. Short-term therapy may suit some individuals. It provides a focused approach to address specific issues or goals within a limited number of sessions. For others, long-term therapy might be necessary if you are grappling with deeper-rooted challenges. It offers more time to cultivate insight, develop coping mechanisms and to foster lasting personal growth and transformation.

How often should I see my therapist?

The frequency of therapy sessions plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall duration of therapy. Some may find weekly sessions most beneficial, especially in the beginning to help with mood stabilization and gain momentum to change. Others may opt for biweekly or monthly appointments. This decision often hinges on several factors, including the severity of the issues at hand, your availability, and financial considerations. By tailoring session frequency to suit your unique needs, your therapists will help you optimize your therapeutic journey for maximum effectiveness.

How will I know I am getting better?

Your therapist will work with you to set goals and track your progress. You will gain deeper insight, acquire new coping skills, and experience positive changes in your life, you may find yourself ready to adjust the frequency of sessions or transition into a maintenance phase of therapy.

What happens when I start to feel better?

After reaching your initial therapy goals, you may opt to continue therapy on an as-needed basis to maintain progress and prevent relapse. This proactive approach may involve periodic check-in sessions or seeking therapeutic support during times of heightened stress or significant life transitions. By incorporating maintenance therapy into your self-care routine, you can sustain the momentum of growth and resilience cultivated during your therapeutic journey. You and your therapist may also decide that you’re ready for a pause or to end therapy. Together, you will prepare to end services, and create a plan to stay well after services have ended. And of course, you are always welcome to return to therapy as new issues arise.

How do you know what will work for me?

We recognize each person is unique, with their own unique circumstances, Your therapist will collaborate with you to co-create a therapeutic plan that aligns with your needs, goals, preferences, and resources. Through open dialogue and mutual understanding, we will help you navigate your way to better mental health.

As you navigate the complexities of therapy, your therapist will be there every step of the way. They are committed to your success and want your feedback on your process so that they can adjust their approach as needed. Knowing what’s working for you and what is not will be key to your success together.

The beginning of February caps off a month that is often filled with resolutions and grand goals. Many usher in the new calendar year aspiring to healthier lifestyles, professional achievements, or personal growth. While setting intentions is a wonderful practice, the eagerness to pursue these aspirations sometimes leads to self-imposed stress and burnout.

The start of a new year symbolizes fresh beginnings, offering a chance to reflect on the past and set new intentions for the future. However, amidst the excitement of creating resolutions and ambitious goals, we often forget a crucial element: self-compassion.

Why Self-Compassion Matters

Self-compassion is the foundation upon which successful goal-setting and personal growth should be built. It involves treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we’d offer to a friend. This concept, championed by psychologists like Kristin Neff, PhD, emphasizes three key components: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness.

Self-kindness is about being gentle and understanding with ourselves, especially when we falter or face setbacks in our pursuits. Instead of harsh self-criticism, self-kindness encourages us to acknowledge our imperfections with empathy.

Common humanity reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. Others face similar challenges, and understanding this shared experience can reduce feelings of isolation and inadequacy.

Mindfulness encourages us to be present and aware of our thoughts and emotions without judgment. It enables us to observe our inner dialogue and choose healthier responses.

Resolutions and Their Pitfalls

New Year’s resolutions often bring with them the pressure to be perfect, which can lead to stress and disappointment. We set high expectations and may become overly self-critical if we don’t meet them immediately.

For example, if your resolution is to exercise more, you might start with enthusiasm. But when life gets busy, and you miss a few workouts, the inner critic may chime in with negative self-talk: “I failed. I can’t stick to anything. I’ll never reach my goals.”

This negative self-talk not only erodes self-esteem but also sabotages your motivation and resolve.

Preventing Burnout and Stress

So, how can we prevent burnout and stress while pursuing our new year goals? The answer lies in integrating self-compassion into our approach:

Set Realistic Goals: Begin by setting achievable and sustainable goals. Rather than aiming for perfection, focus on progress. If your goal is to exercise more, start with a manageable routine that fits your schedule.

Practice Mindful Awareness: Pay attention to your inner dialogue. When self-criticism arises, pause and replace it with kind and constructive self-talk. Remind yourself that setbacks are normal and part of the journey.

Cultivate Self-Kindness: Treat yourself as you would a dear friend. Offer yourself words of encouragement and support, especially when facing challenges.

Embrace Common Humanity: Remember that everyone faces obstacles. Share your experiences and challenges with supportive friends or a mentor. Connecting with others can provide valuable perspective and encouragement.

Adapt and Adjust: Be flexible in your approach. If you encounter obstacles or need to modify your goals, do so without judgment. The key is to keep moving forward.

By embracing self-compassion, you transform your resolutions from sources of stress into opportunities for growth and self-improvement. As you navigate the early part of 2024, remember that the most meaningful changes often arise from a place of self-love and understanding. This year, let self-compassion be your guiding star on the path to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Take the time to choose a therapist that is right for you. You can ask friends and family for referrals. Or, you can do a web search and start from there. Read our profiles on directories such as Psychology Today and comb through our websites and blogs. Look for someone who talks about the population they serve as well as their philosophy of working with clients.

We humans are visual creatures and photos tell a story. Usually pictures accompany clinician profiles. Look for appropriateness. For example, while glamour shots, seductive poses and sunglasses have their time and place, they don’t convey what you are looking for in a therapist. When you consider their photo, listen to your intuition and ask yourself whether you would feel comfortable sharing the most intimate details of your life with this person.

Consider gender, ethnic/racial background and group affiliations. Depending on your personal identity and past experiences, this may be important to you. There’s nothing wrong with having a preference. It’s important that you feel comfortable with your therapist.

Narrow down your list to 2 or 3 and call us. Ask us about our speciality, where we went to school, what our credentials are and whether we have the kind of experience you are looking for. If religion and spirituality are an important part of your life, you will want to ask how we incorporate these dimensions in our practice. You can even ask us if we’ve ever been in therapy ourselves. Having done our own work as therapists is essential to being able to accompany our clients well on their own journey.

What about approach or theoretical orientation? Unless you are well versed in psychology, this can get tricky. There are so many approaches and orientations that listing and explaining them would make this post more like a book. A good question to ask is “what is your approach and how do you tailor it to your client’s needs”. What’s important here, is to know that within a few sessions your therapist will be able to properly assess where you are at and be able to make a plan with you, including goals to work toward, to help you get better.

Listen and notice. How did you feel reading the therapist’s profile? What’s your overall impression of their photos and website ? When you talked to them, did you feel heard and understood? During your first appointment, how did you feel? You may decide after a few appointments that you and your therapist aren’t a good fit. This happens and it’s normal. Don’t let it deter you from continuing to work on yourself and heal. Though sometimes awkward, it’s good to discuss this with your therapist and even ask for a referral to someone they think might be a better suited to your needs. Most of us have done this before and we want what’s best for you. If you would like more information on how we at The Lighthouse – Le Phare can help, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at info@theligthouse-lephare.ca, (613) 371-6778 if you are in the Ottawa Valley, and 1-800-280-2149 throughout Ontario.

I don’t want to write about my problems in a journal, I want my therapist to solve them for me. That’s why I pay her. I have a hard enough time writing an email for work, how can writing help me? I just want my therapist to make me feel better. And I don’t think getting writer’s cramp is going to do it for me! She said I could just use printer paper but a nice journal would be encouraging (or I would feel guilty about the money I paid for an expensive journal and the guilt would force me to use it). I’m not sure guilt as motivator is the goal here. Whatever. NO journal is lovely and meaningful to me, haha. She also suggested I decorate it. To make it feel more personal. Shouldn’t the deep, emotional truths I write in it make it feel more personal? She thinks I’m a toddler. In kindergarten. Decorating things with stickers.

That’s twenty-seven shelves of books, most of which have NOTHING written in them! Crazy. Shelves and shelves of books with empty pages. Absurd. Some of the books have grids on the pages. Does that make the stuff written on them more scientific? Probably. And some are covered in leather and look like a prop from Game of Thrones. Quill not included. Some of them have short prompts to “inspire” the writer. Bah. I’m not inspired, I’m……

A little inside joke. My depression….no, wait, I mean, the depression (therapist says I don’t own depression -everybody gets to have some) leaks out sometimes as a sick sense of humour. Blue, haha. It came with stickers. My favourite says “Keep Out!!!” As if the journal wants to stay blank forever. I wrote my name on the first page. Therapist said to start with what I know. I’m a smart-ass even to myself. But then again, this journal should be anonymous. So I put a line through my name. Now I look like I don’t even know my own name! Now I really don’t know what to write. So then I wrote “This is stupid.” And “I don’t know what to write.” And “My therapist’s mean.” But then I crossed that one out. Ten minutes passed. “My journal hates me. I wish I could write something cool. Why doesn’t anything interesting happen to me? I just want my life to be interesting and wish something would come up and make me feel like this is worth it and I could stop just feeling sorry for myself and get going on my life. It feels like my life is paused while I figure stuff out but somehow it got unpaused without me knowing it and…..” I stopped after twenty-seven pages.
